Choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding day is an important decision that requires some thought and often depends on what your beauty budget is for the day. Recommendations from friends are usually the best place to start, but you also need to feel comfortable with the person doing your makeup.

Most makeup artist will offer some sort of free consultation and a preview for a minimal fee. Preview consultations should be scheduled far enough in advance that you have time to make changes and meet with other makeup artists if needed. Remember, most makeup artists book 6 months to a year in advance so don’t wait until the last minute to start looking.

Makeup artists are not mind readers.

You need to bring as much as you can with you to the consultation so the makeup artist has a clear picture of what you want. Bring magazine pages of looks you like, a picture of your dress, hair accessories, etc. All of these are things to help the makeup artist know who you are and what your final look will be.

If you do not like your makeup, say something immediately so the makeup artist can try a different look. During your makeup preview, be sure to ask questions like “How long will my makeup last? Do you stay for touch-ups? What is your travel fee?” Many makeup artists include a tube of lipstick for touch-ups, but you should always ask so you are not surprised the day of your wedding with hidden costs.
