Beautiful Flowers - Floral Trends
Winter Weddings
Featured Article by Marisilda Garcia
Having a winter wedding this year? You’re in luck. Living in Southern California has its perks for winter weddings. Aside from the weather, local florists abound with a wide variety of blooms to compliment your style and personality.
So what’s new in floral trends for a 2010 winter wedding? Marcia L. Johnson Floral Artistry gives us a look at this winter’s trends...
First off: earthy inspiration. California is one of the largest eco friendly states in the US so it’s no surprise that this year’s trend is to “go green.” Finding ways to help the movement by using recycled glass, wood & metal containers adds a personalized touch to your centerpiece. Flowers from a local grower save on gas emissions from travel to your city.
Think retro: While the poodle skirt & bell bottoms haven’t quite made a comeback, bright, bold colors are in this winter. Using blue in combination with brown, pink or peach adds a pop of color to your wedding day.
Adding winter accents to your floral arrangement such as berries, apples, artichokes & unusual foliage makes your centerpieces stand out as well.
Super size it: A non-floral trend this year is a larger wedding party. Bridesmaids & Groomsmen seem to be the added touch in making your wedding a true family affair.
Popular flowers this year range from amaryllis flowers (from deep red hues to striped varieties), orchids, tulips & peonies (in Dec and Jan).
Give your floral designer at least 4 months to prepare, depending on the size of your bridal party.
On a budget? No problem. Be upfront with your floral designer. They cater to all types of weddings & budgets.
Marcia L. Johnson Floral Artistry builds around your flowers for each season & your budget while keeping with the green movement. They service all types of wedding sizes. Most memorable to date: the Authentic Victorian designer wedding done at the Hotel Del Coronado with 24 bridesmaids & 350 guests.

FLEUR A’ LA MODE
“Flowers and Fashion”
Article by Marcia L. Johnson
Today’s wedding flower décor inspiration is directly influenced by fashion. What’s the first purchase a bride usually makes? Her wedding gown of course!
The smallest detail on a gown can be the beginning of an inspiration for your wedding florals and décor. From a colored satin sash, unique embroidery, a brooch, lace, feathers and rhinestones let these details guide your imagination. Even a gown without any embellishments can evoke a certain minimalist/modern design style.
Don’t let your attendants dresses directly influence a matching color theme. For instance if your bridesmaids’ dresses are a red shade consider a green complement such as a bouquet of green cymbidium orchids, green roses, berries and brown monkey’s tail or bouquets of plums and eggplant tones using eggplant mini calla lilies, and plum orchids.
A bridal gown with a ruffled flounce detail calls for equally ruffled shaped blooms such as catteleya orchids which could carry over into an entire orchid theme for your wedding. Soft peonies, when in season, in white or pink tones would work beautifully for the same ruffle details.
Consider accents that come from nature like feathers to complement your florals. Wearing feather accents in your hair? Carry that over into your bouquet as a collar to surround simple white dahlias or white freesia. Peacock feathers are a dramatic choice along with cinnabar colored roses if your bridesmaids’ dresses are espresso, teal or bronze tones.
The latest trend in gowns are retro silhouettes and lace overlays. If your dress has a Spanish feel with lace consider vases wrapped with red or plum fabric and black lace overlays with red or plum florals.
If your gown has a retro 1950’s feel go for updated looks using old time flowers such as, yes, carnations !
All one flower tightly arranged looks beautiful as a centerpiece even carnations or old fashioned China or spider mums. There are a huge variety of colors to choose from.
There are no set rules in fashion or floral design so let your imagination be your guide!
